If you want to have it automated, you have to use iCloud. In other words, as long as you don't sign up for iCloud library, you are free to do whatever you want with your pictures and it works pretty well (there are maybe too many options available). Any "manual" access to the pictures could cause the actual contents of the photo library to differ from the database and cause problems. The reason is the service is build around a database and the records are synchronized with the cloud and then removed automatically from the optimized devices. There is a technical reason why enabling iCloud storage and optimizing your local file storage takes over the process and makes iCloud the only location you can download your pictures from. ![]() The price for using the above methods is all the pictures you take reside physically in the phone memory and you have to copy and delete them to free up the space. The other options are not awful - from Airdrop, through networking (via files) to using software to download files from iPhone (there are multiple options AFAIK) - it all works. Just select the photo(s) to share, then "Save to Files" and you'll see your PC's IP address and shared folders listed as options. You can also transfer the photos directly from the iPhone's Photos app. You should be good to go with transferring files and photos back and forth. Your phone will then have a secure connection to your PC via Wi-Fi and your shared folders will appear. Select registered user and enter the log in credentials for your PC and click Next.
